Run for Hope in fight against cancer

When Melinda Bryce was diagnosed with breast cancer, she soon found out she wasn’t alone.

The Yarraville mother of two was 29 when she found a suspicious lump in her breast during a self-examination.

“I was diagnosed in July 2014. I have had a couple of operations, chemotherapy and I had a mastectomy on one of my breasts,” she said.

“Essentially, they believe they have treated my cancer; now it’s just regular scans.”

Her family, friends and community rallied around her, and support was at hand from Pink Hope, a charity that supports women and families with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

This Sunday, Ms Bryce will take part in Run for Hope, founded by Pink Hope ambassador Sarah Powell, a neighbour of Ms Bryce’s.

The 8.5-kilometre run or 4.25-kilometre run/walk along the Maribyrnong River starts and finishes in Coulson Gardens, Maribyrnong.

“The idea is to raise funds but also awareness about Pink Hope and what they do for people,” Ms Bryce said. “They have been incredibly supportive.”

Sunday’s Run for Hope starts at 10am and features entertainment, a raffle, health information and food, along with fun for the kids. Details www.runforhope.com.au
