The clock is ticking for inner-west pet owners to re-register their feline friends and canine companions.

All dogs and cats must have their registration renewed with their council by April 10 each year.

Owners face fines of about $300 for failing to register and microchip all dogs and cats over the age of three months.

Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said registration fees fund a range of animal services, including after-hours rescue of injured animals, helping to reunite lost pets with their owners, maintaining off-lead parks and programs to prevent animal attacks.

Maribyrnong council plans to mail renewal notices to all current pet owners by the end of February.

Anyone who does not receive a renewal notice is urged to contact 9688 0200.
