Again, the Footscray Council, on Monday night, was disturbed by an argument in which heated words were exchanged. This time it arose over the payment of increased salaries to the staff, and councillors Farnsworth and Beckett became embroiled. Councillors generally were profuse in their recognition that Footscray is in possession of a highly efficient staff of officers.

Footscray Council needs to back the Melbourne Cup winner, bump up its rates by 100 per cent or sack half of its staff to get out of financial trouble. This is the view of some councillors who this week racked their brains trying to balance the city’s books. The

Mail believes the new rate struck by council next week will be about 26 cents in the dollar – an increase of almost 53 per cent on the present rate of 17 cents in the dollar.
