Footscray Advertiser

January 27, 1965

The charitable work of the Footscray Lions Club was eulogised in Footscray Court on Monday when four members faced charges over a raffle.

Summing up, the magistrate, Mr Pfeifer, commented that “the Lions Club certainly has done great work for charity”.

However, he said, the fact was that cash prizes were not permitted in the raffle in question.

Mr Pfeifer nevertheless took a lenient view and adjourned the charges, without recording a conviction.

Telephone box vandalism in Footscray and the western suburbs is worse than in any other part of the state.

In parts of West Footscray and in Housing Commission areas, PMG technicians from Footscray Fault Despatch Centre have carried out repairs to the same phone boxes three days in succession.

The ever-increasing vandalism in the west is costing the PMG Department well over $100,000 a year and adding to the national phone box vandalism bill of $3 million a year.

Williamstown Advertiser

January 30, 1985

Port Phillip sea pilots are pulling out all stops to prevent eviction from their headquarters in Williamstown.

The pilots, who have been tenants of the Nelson Pl building for the past 112 years, fear that the federal government may hand the Customs House to the Maritime Trust for use as a museum.

Sea Pilots’ acting secretary Captain Brian Lewis said according to historic records, the government had no right to hand the building over to the Maritime Trust.

The Altona Village Traders Association has given the thumbs up to a proposed planning amendment that would change the face of the Pier Street activity centre and its neighbourhood, reinforcing the district’s role as a business hub.

Hobsons Bay Council is looking at changing the planning scheme in the area through Amendment C51 to give effect to the Altona Beach Activity Precinct Urban Design Framework, which identifies the goals for the area’s physical, social and economic future over the next 10-15 years.
