At the beginning of the war, Footscray Council allowed the use of Johnson, Angliss,
and Henry Turner reserves on Sundays to accommodate men unable to play sport on Saturdays due to their long hours working for the war effort. At Monday’s council meeting, Cr McNab moved that Hansen Reserve, Kingsville, be added to the list. He considered it inconsistent to permit one space to be used and not another.

The president of Footscray Traders’ Association, Mr K.W. Spurling, has received confirmation of approval for the Footscray off-street parking scheme. He outlined some of the difficulties that have delayed the scheme in the six years since it was first promoted. The scheme, expected to cost about £587,720, is to provide free parking for 1105 cars in areas close to the main shopping areas in Footscray. It is to be financed by a special rate levied on the areas expected to benefit.

State Attorney-General Vernon Wilcox officially opened Williamstown’s handsome new court house – the city’s fourth – last Friday afternoon. The new court house stands beneath splendid old elm trees at the corner of Thompson and Cecil streets on the site of the court house burned out more than four years ago. “I could not be more pleased with the functionalism of this new building,” said Mr Geoffrey Hoare, stipendiary magistrate, who presided at the ceremony.

Hoffman Reserve, which was abandoned last year after the state government’s Westparks CEP program dried up, is to get a new lease of life. The reserve has been left unfinished as no more CEP funds could be raised and the Williamstown council did not have the funds to develop it further. The Melbourne Western Region Commission has given the council $15,000 from its Regional Action Program to complete the recreation area.
