Community-minded Maxine Elliott loves the vibrancy and harmony of the Maribyrnong melting pot, but she tells Benjamin Millar that she sees potential for a whole lot more.
What do you love about Maribyrnong?
I love the fact we have the river, which makes it a unique environment. In the morning it feels like the country around the river, it’s so peaceful. I also enjoy the fact that we have so many cultures here intermingling with each other in harmony.
What community activities are you involved in and what drives you to be involved?
I am involved in organising the Edgewater Fusion Festival and the Friends of Jacks Magazine. Additionally, I’m part of Footscray Lions Club, which among other things, is organising the Footscray Retro Market. I enjoy the chance to get involved in the community while providing a service. I’m also keen to see the west grow and become more vibrant.
I’m a firm believer in “Go West, young man (or woman)!”
What’s your favourite local café or eatery?
Footscray Milking Station, Sorriso Caffe & Trattoria, West 48, Café Boutique, and Cravin’ Crepes. I don’t like to single any out and I’m sure there are lots more I haven’t mentioned, so please don’t be offended if I haven’t mentioned your café or eatery.
What makes you laugh?
British comedy. I was born in Liverpool, Luv!
What would you change about Maribyrnong?
Increase the services and amenities available to people in the area. The west is undergoing a huge change as people discover this side of Melbourne is a nice place to live. Let’s make it an even better place to live, including more festivals.
What inspires you?
Common people helping others without any wish for acknowledgment. As a teacher who teaches at Western Autistic School, I’m inspired by my colleagues and the young students I teach. Also, obviously, my family is my inspiration.
