An old-school charmer: 100 Market Street, Newport, 3015

This post-war house represents a period in which architects clambered to understand the needs of families of the day.

Today, 100 Market Street presents intriguing and appealing opportunities for the future. The house has two bedrooms, a central living room with a ’50s-style gas heater, central bathroom and a traditional kitchen with a view to the backyard.

A large garage and a workshop at the end of it are built in timber. A bungalow with power could be a third bedroom or studio, depending on your needs and vision.

The backyard is big – the allotment is about 447 squares – and quality brick paving has been set to create an outdoor entertainment area.

This style of house is from a time when commercial building technology was becoming more readily available.

Yet the mainstays of traditional family homes – such as dark wood Edwardian-esque doors and picture rails, ornate plasterwork on the ceilings of the main rooms (referencing earlier Victorian times) – were still very much part of what families of the day thought to be stylish.

Set in a stand-out location in the heart of Newport, this house is just seconds away from Newport Football Club, foodie delights such as Searz Cafe, Leroy’s Cafe and The Backyard Est 2016 and a large family park with the almost brand-new state-of-the-art local library opposite it.

The train is moments away, as is the local gastropub, The Junction Hotel – a short walk for relaxed family dinners on Friday nights.

As well, just a little further away are Williamstown Beach and The Strand and many magnificent bay views.

This property, although absolutely liveable and with oodles of charm, also offers grand opportunities for new owners to stamp their own style on it through renovations.

What cannot be taken away from it are the beautiful, deep timber sash windows at the front of the house and other multiple references to all there is to love about the designs of changing times.
