Clontarf on Laverton: 32 Laverton Street, Williamstown, 3016

History can tell us so much of the here and now, and the ownership of this stately double-fronted Victorian known as Clontarf does just that, with only three owners since it was built in c1860.

Set on about 746 square metres, with rear access, garaging for five cars, a kitchen garden, large lawn and fruit trees that have belonged to the property as long as the house itself, it has a magical charm.

Continually updated and maintained, the standards are faultless. Hardwood floors, a 1.5 metre hall and almost four metre-high ceilings provide instant impact.

Two large bedrooms off the entry have fully-restored original fireplaces. There are built-in robes in one and a walk-through wardrobe in the other, leading to the en suite with corner-set spa. Just installed plantation shutters add impact.

The large laundry leads to a powder room. Two further generously proportioned bedrooms also have fireplaces, one bedroom has a walk-in robe with a study nook, the other has a built-in robe.

French doors with stained-glass commissioned to tie-in with original glass at the entryway, create great zoning and ensures the extension looks like it was part of the original design.

Walk through to a light-filled open-plan living area. A commanding gas fireplace with marble surround warms you on winter nights in this expansive room.

A huge bay with over-sized sash windows is perfect as a breakfast nook or reading space. It looks out to the stunning backyard with generous lawn.

The kitchen is large and has hardwood cabinetry, dark marble benchtops, high ceilings and a large skylight flooding the room with light. The adjacent dining area looks on to the deck.

Here, downlights and white timber ceiling features blend the deck with the house’s style. A grapevine adds to the appeal.

Walk down a red-brick path to the screened kitchen garden area and into the huge garage with all the storage you’ll ever need.
