Contemporary history: 51 Cole Street, Williamstown, 3016

Named for the first owner’s migration ship, Abeone is a magnificent c1890s residence in a fab pocket of town.  It’s directly opposite Robinsons Reserve with Williamstown Primary School just beyond, a three-minute amble from Commonwealth Reserve and Nelson Place eateries, and 10 from Esplanade beach.

Aesthetically stunning right from the front gate, Abeone well and truly lives up to its enviable locale. Period detail is rich, with plasterwork on soaring ceilings particularly gorgeous. Original Baltic floorboards – which continue in reclaimed form in the contemporary zone – along with fretwork, beautiful leadlight and three magnificent fireplaces capture history – although the house is also a contemporary delight.

Along the entry hall are sitting and dining rooms, with a two-way fireplace set in an island wall, and a pair of dramatic lightfittings. Windows, one with leadlight transom, are stylishly dressed – interior decor is classy all through.

Also along the hall are two delightful bedrooms, one with a fireplace set in exposed bricks, the other with french doors to deck and pool. Each has en suite access to a spacious bathroom with a clawfoot tub.

Defined by a step down, the contemporary living domain is next. Banks of tall windows draw in the light and frame pool views, while a wood heater is under an antique surround. A dropped ceiling above the sitting zone underscores other clever architectural elements.

Adjoining a walk-through butler’s pantry (with Miele dishwasher) and storage-rich laundry, the kitchen has granite benches and splashback, cabinetry with lots of drawers, Neff dual ovens and a Smeg 900mm induction cooktop.

Three more fitted and grey-carpeted bedrooms are up top, each with a diamond-shaped porthole window and sharing a bathroom. The floorboarded living room here has a vaulted ceiling and a picture window.

The solar-heated self-cleaning salt pool offers a retreat from the sun under a verandah, while a timber deck catches the rays. A recently revamped carpeted office/studio with pergola neighbours the pool area, and a double carport with workshop space is accessed from the side street.

Those first owners would love how their Abeone looks now…and so will today’s families.
