Edwardian glam: 178 Melbourne Road, Williamstown, 3016

By Carole Levy

A combination of gorgeous Edwardian detail and contemporary spaces delivers a house of enormous appeal, just a four-minute walk one way to Williamstown North Primary and the other to Jackson Reserve’s playground.

It couldn’t get prettier kerbside, the corner block replete with romantic gardens of roses and specimen trees. And, inside, it’s just as good.

The entry hall, with corbelled arch and the same floorboards laid throughout the ground floor, has double doors on the left opening to a study or fourth bedroom.

The large carpeted main bedroom opposite has walk-through robes and a two-way en suite with a pair of delightful leadlight windows and black stone-topped vanity and a tub. Basin and tub are both in a blush-pink shade.

Two fitted and grey-carpeted bedrooms up top (each with vaulted ceiling) share a bathroom similarly decked out as the en suite.

A walk-through carpeted lounge room, preceding the living hub, has a cast-iron fireplace and period-style surround, a ceiling rose, stepped cornices and skirts, and three windows (with transoms) lavishly dressed in cherry-red damask.

The contemporary floorboarded living domain retains stepped cornices and skirts and has a glass slider to a partially covered elevated deck with leafy surrounds. Large windows admit northerly light.

The kitchen, with another lovely leadlight window, has an abundance of white cupboards, black stone benches, black splashback tiles and dishwasher, gas cooktop and underbench oven.

Brick-patterned concrete runs under a carport and into the backyard. Side gates from Albert Street provide carport access and there’s a shed behind.

The property, the embodiment of Williamstown excellence, is likely to have savvy buyers lining up at the auction.
