Royal quarters: G1/23 Buckingham Street, Footscray, 3011

The Buckingham Hotel was a much-loved local in Footscray but is these days home to four gorgeous apartments, including this one.

Like its near neighbours, it has a car spot on the title.

Also on title is the old pub cellar – currently used as a cinema room.

The front door opens to a large living room with original, re-conditioned hardwood Baltic pine floorboards and over three-metre high ceilings.

A split-system cools this generous and light-filled room in the summer months, with double brick and good old-fashioned solid building principles keeping the heat in during the winter months.

Step down to the original entry of the pub, now a small sitting room featuring the original flooring.

Sit here to catch the warmth through the large period windows.

The kitchen stands where the bar hosted many fun nights and lazy days.

It has composite stone benchtops, plenty of storage, an island bench with a twin sink, Smeg stainless-steel oven and a Blanco dishwasher.

A European laundry is set behind concertina doors in the hall that leads to the main bathroom.

This space is quite large, so could be reconfigured to allow for a return staircase leading down to the cellar, which is currently accessed through a hallway trap door.

The cellar space is large at five by six metres.

There is a sense of light and space in the bedrooms, which helps accentuate
the apartment’s generous and open proportions.

The two carpeted bedrooms have built-in robes.

The main bedroom boasts a large en suite.

The apartment is about the same, close distance from both the cafes, restaurants and shops of Seddon, in one direction, and the equally appealing delights of Footscray central, in another – including Foostcray Market.

And just a few blocks away is the Middle Footscray train station.
