St Aloysius College has commenced an exciting new chapter in the college’s rich 136 year history, marking for the first time a co-educational Year 7 intake.
Not only a milestone for the college, which is the first Catholic co-education secondary school in the inner city of Melbourne.
St Aloysius will welcome co-educational Year 7 intakes to the school until late 2028, when the college will become fully co-educational.
College principal Mary Farah acknowledged the progressive change is based upon changing needs and the changing times we’re living in.
“Life is certainly co-ed and so are we,” Ms Farah said.
St Aloysius strives to draw strength from difference. Staff aim to recognise how important diverse perspectives can be and Ms Farah said this improves a child’s understanding of each other and the world around them.
“Moving to co-education provides an opportunity for our college to expand this view, reflecting the world in our classrooms and giving students the support to navigate the challenges of social and emotional growth while building mutual respect.”
As the new co-ed students entered the gates last week, the college was abuzz and Mr Ross De Rango and Dr Sarah McClusky’s sons were among the crowd.
As parents they wanted a school that their two sons and daughter could go to that was close to home, and ideally a Catholic environment.
“Schools form a cornerstone of our communities, particularly the Catholic ones, where the activities of school and parish are linked,” they said.
“St Aloysius brings together families from all walks of life, and in expanding to include boys, is embracing a larger part of the community around the inner north-west.”

For the class of 2022, one in ten students achieved an ATAR average of 94, while one in five achieved an average ATAR of 92.
“It is our great joy to see our students develop a life-long love of learning, built on curiosity, framed by an outward looking and forward-thinking approach,” Ms Farah said.
