B-boys break it down in Footscray

Take a glimpse into the heart of b-boy and b-girl culture at Footscray Community Arts Centre this week.

Dance performance Cypher features four battle-hardened b-boys pushing the boundaries of the breakdance artform, using its movement and energy to challenge and celebrate hip-hop culture.

Choreographed by renowned b-boy Nick Power, Cypher draws the audience to the very edge of the traditional breakdance circle to explore the inner workings of the form.

Power said the idea came to him while in Paris in 2012 as he watched a handful of dancers the day after attending a massive dance battle in front of 10,000 spectators.

“It just dawned on me, the importance of the cypher to we b-boys and b-girls,” he said. “There’s such a rich sense of tension and rivalry as well as freedom to express and learn off your peers and friends.”

Cypher will be performed at 7pm nightly until Saturday and 2pm on Saturday in the FCAC Performance Space.

Tickets are $25/$20.

Cypher cast members are also leading workshops that take participants through the foundations of breaking.

The workshops will be held at 10.30am for children 12 and under and 11.30am for those 13 and over. The cost is $12.
