Brazilian storyteller Cadu Cinelli will visit Williamstown’s Loom Room next month.
In 1998, Mr Cinelli co-founded Os Tapetes Contadores de Historias, or The Carpet Storytellers, a group in Rio de Janeiro that makes and uses carpet and cloth items to tell popular tales from all over the world.
They’ve performed widely, including in Central America, Portugal and Spain.
The Loom Room, in partnership with Williamstown library, has organised for Mr Cinelli to share his craft and storytelling with local artists and performers.
Mr Cinelli says he will explain his textile props and share Brazilian songs during his visit.
“I hope my work will inspire the fabric artists and story-makers to think about how they, too, can work in an interdisciplinary way with textiles and narrative to make stories,” he said.
“As well as explaining the work of my storytelling company, I’ll perform with textile books, carpets and embroidered boxes.
“These props are the landscapes and scenarios for the Andin narrative of
The Mystery of Pachacamac, the Amazonic tale of The White Monkey and the Jaguar, the French Jojo’s Story, the Russian fairy adventures of Wassaliza, and a Brazilian folktale, The Mother of the Water.”
People can meet Mr Cinelli on March 2, 7-9pm, at The Loom Room in Williamstown. Entry is $5. Bookings can be made via the library website or on 1300 462 542.
