Brittania rules at Williamstown Prom night

Last Night of the Proms is at Williamstown Town Hall on October 10 from 7.30pm. Tickets are $42.50/$37.50. For bookings and more information, visit hobsonsbaytickets.com.au or ring 9932 4074.

Prommers will be wearing Union Jack insignia and making plenty of noise at the Last Night of the Proms in Williamstown next month.

Based on the annual event of the same name in England, the concert features classical artist Mark Vincent, who won Australia’s Got Talent in 2009 at age 15.

The Western Region Concert Band and SingWest will perform popular music from the likes of Star Wars, The Beatles and James Bond films, followed by traditional British patriotic pieces including Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of Hope and Glory), Jerusalem and Rule, Britannia!

Band publicity officer John Mansfield said prommers – the name given to people who attend prom concerts – would be dressing up, waving flags and singing along at the 15th prom night to be held in Williamstown.

“They might put on a funny hat or a hat with Union Jack on it,” he said. “I’ve seen people with Union Jack vests on, I’ve seen people with Australian vests on.

“They’ll take streamers. They’ll take air horns and things like this. And they’ll hoot those things, and they’ll stand up and sing and blow whistles.

“They like to join in the fun – and they’re encouraged to do it.”
