Braybrook will be alive with the colours and sounds of India on Saturday as part of the annual Bathukamma Festival of Flowers.

More than 2000 members of Melbourne Indian Telugu Telangana people are expected to attend the festival at Braybrook’s RecWest.

The festival, celebrating the Telangana region of India, will feature traditional music and dance, Indian games, children’s entertainment and talks by community members.

Organiser and Melbourne Telangana Forum president Rajesh Reddy said Bathukamma – primarily a women’s festival – was a folk art celebration of life and nature that marked the beginning of sharad ritu (early autumn).

“It is a unique tribute to nature which starts with colourful flowers and culminates in a river or lake,” he said.

“Women participate in the festival with great fervour, dressing up in their best, wearing traditional silk sarees and jewellery.”

Mr Reddy said a feeling of community spirit was at the core of the festival.

The Bathukamma Festival of Flowers will be celebrated from 1-9pm on Saturday, October 1, at RecWest Recreation Centre, 39 Lily Street, Braybrook.
