Footscray’s Asylum artwork takes $5000 street art prize

David Watson, otherwise known as Machinegun Dev, has collected the $5000 first prize in the Footscray Street Art Competition.

Watson, currently working out of Search&Destroy Studios in Footscray, picked up the biggest street art prize in Australia with his work reflecting this year’s theme, Asylum.

The judges were Footscray Community Arts Centre chief executive Jade Lillie, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre chief executive Kon Karapanagiotidis and last year’s winner Stuart Stark (Putos).

Prize organiser Grant Miles said the competition supported emerging artists, covered ugly tagging and graffiti and highlighted social themes.
