Children’s Book Week kicks off with a books festival in Altona on Saturday, giving people a chance to meet authors and illustrators who “live next door”.

Organised by Aly’s Books and Mamma Knows West, the free festival is at Altona library from noon until 3pm.

Independent book publisher Aly Walsh says people will be able to meet some of their favourite local writers and emerging talents on the Melbourne literary scene.

“It’s such a joy to see the kids being inspired by local authors and illustrators and to see that in their local library,” Ms Walsh said.

The program features storytellers, musicians, craft, face-painting, a ‘book cubby’ and performers.

In the lead-up to Book Week (August 20-26), Hobsons Bay Libraries is hosting special Book of the Year story times all week.

Books have been chosen from the early childhood category of the Book of the Year awards.
