Master drummer to host Laverton workshops

Master drummer and dancer Fred Kpakpo Addo will teach classes in Laverton when he returns from Ghana next month.

Mr Kpakpo Addo, a drummer for 22 years, says music has always been a part of his life.

“I grew up in a huge family full of music and I got interested in this by playing,” he said.

“I got to a point that I took it as my profession.

“After high school, a band – Kuson Ensemble, based in Ghana – hired me to join them.

“I taught with Kuson Ensemble in the US – 22 states in six months.”

From there, he taught in Tel Aviv, Israel, for six months before a stint in Sweden.

Mr Kpakpo Addo settled in Australia a year ago.

His One Spirit African drumming classes offer people the chance to join a weekly drumming circle, with dance sessions afterwards.

Drums can be hired on the night and the sessions are open to all ages and abilities.

Monday classes start October 26, with drumming from 6.30-7.30pm, followed by an hour of dance.

The cost is $20 per class (or $30 for both); $10 for 15-18-year-olds; and free for children under 15. Drum hire is $5.

Bookings are preferred by calling 0408245494.
