Mosaic art unveiled at Newport Lakes

Internationally-renowned Altona mosaic artist Julee Latimer unveiled her latest work at Newport Lakes last week.

The park’s walking trails already have eight mosaics on rocks, which have been there for many years.

In 2009, Friends of Newport Lakes commissioned Ms Latimer to replace one of the damaged ceramic mosaics with a newly designed and executed glass mosaic, The Southern Bell Frogs.

In 2010, Ms Latimer completed a second work, Rainbow Lorikeet and Gulah. Her latest project has been to replace two more artworks, damaged mostly by exposure to the elements, using the original choice of materials.

“The new two are Dusky Moorhens and Honeyeaters and Fairy Wren,” she said.

“The idea is that people can wander the trails, see the mosaics and then look for the real thing in the surrounding area.

“The works add interest to the walks, and, being glass mosaic, they shimmer and sparkle at different times of the day according to light levels.”
