Puppy tale to wag festival

A dog that stole the heart of a Hoppers Crossing animal rescue organisation has been immortilised in a children’s book.

Author Kylie Symons (pictured with her son Lachlan) has used the story of a great dane called Hope for her first book, Help Hope Find Her Waggy Tail.

The 34-year-old Wyndham Vale resident has spent the past three years working with volunteer animal rescue organisation Puppy Tales Rescue, and was heartbroken when Hope, a shelter favourite, passed away after seven months at Puppy Tales.

“She was the most adorable dog – and she was like the matriarch of everyone,” Ms Symons said.

“It was a really emotional thing when she passed away and I wanted to give something back – and that’s how the book became about Hope.

“I want to be able to teach children about rescuing dogs and not buying from puppy farms or pet shops.”

Ms Symons will be one of five authors and two illustrators from across the west who will take part in readings, meet-and-greets and workshops this Saturday from 10am to noon at the Altona Meadows library for the Mamma Knows West and Aly’s Book Fest.
