It started 60 years ago as a working men’s club, but these days not-for-profit Altona Sports Club is kicking goals in many areas: dining, entertainment, sports and functions, as well as generous community sponsorships.

Club manager Gavin Comport says what hasn’t changed in six decades is the friendliness and inclusion of everyone in the community.

“It was true all those years ago that people needed a place to socialise and engage in activities together and it’s still the same today,” Gavin says. “Because we have a reputation for welcoming everyone, we know some of our customers would be at a loss without being able to pop in for a drink, a game of pool or darts or be part of the cricket and lawn bowls teams.”

The club has three function rooms, perfect for any occasion, weddings, engagements, birthdays or that special event. The Main Hall caters for up to 250 guests, the Waterfront Reception Room and Seaview Lounge both cater for up to 120 guests – they have all needs covered. At this time of year, the club turns its attention to Christmas functions and staff break-ups. The Main Hall, the scene for Saturday night ballroom dancing, bingo and tribute shows; Waterfront Reception Room, for up to 120 guests; and the more intimate Seaview Lounge, with outstanding ocean views and perfect for corporate meetings.

Now warm weather is here, the outdoor area is the spot for enjoying a sea breeze while having a drink with the family or even a meal from the bistro. The Seaview Lounge is the place to enjoy live entertainment every Saturday night – or get into free karaoke on Friday nights. And, of course, the Sports Bar has its own feel, with three pool tables and plenty of after-work chat.

“This coming Saturday (October 27), we again welcome Five and a Half Men to the club. They kick off at 9pm and guarantee a great night with their hits from the ‘70s to today. They’ll have everyone up on the dance floor,” says Gavin.

“Then on November 30, it’s “Back to the ’70s & ’80s” in the Main Hall, bringing hits from Abba through to Guns ‘n’ Roses.

“Then on December 7 it’s Wendy Stapleton with The Swinging 60s Show.”

The recently revamped Bayview Bistro has a great menu, with something for everyone, including the kids.

The chef offers a modern-Aussie take
on steaks, burgers, pasta and seafood and has retained some classic dishes such as lambs fry and bacon, roasts, chicken parma and even bangers and mash. And with sticky date and gooey chocolate puddings on the dessert menu … no more needs to be said.
