A new team of women has taken over the reins at Hobsons Bay council, with Sandra Wilson as mayor and Colleen Gates her deputy.
The two, who were elected to the council in October last year, were the only nominations at a special council meeting on Friday.
They replace outgoing mayor Angela Altair and deputy Luba Grigorovitch.
Cr Wilson (pictured), who represents Cherry Lake ward, emphasised that being a councillor was about working together with fellow councillors and the community.
“Being a councillor is both challenging and extremely gratifying,” she said. “To be mayor certainly takes it up a notch, but I relish that challenge for the future and I look forward to giving it my all for the next 12 months.
“I think our collaboration and collective commitment to working hard for Hobsons Bay is a hallmark of this term of council.
“This emphasises the fact that the business of council is indeed a team effort.
“It’s about elected representatives working together … and most importantly working together with our community.
“After all, why are we here if we are not working for community?”
Cr Wilson said she would champion Hobsons Bay’s natural environment and advocate for better public transport, provision of education and affordable housing.
Cr Gates, who represents Wetlands ward, described Cr Wilson as a “very genuine person” and said she looked forward to working with her.
