Altona traders and community organisations have said thank you to Victoria’s CFA and MFB firefighters by celebrating National Red Balloon Day.
The event was inspired by Bendigo woman Jody Hardiman, who created a Facebook event to honour and thank firefighters across Australia. Her page has more than 6000 members.
Firefighters joined traders and community workers in Somers Parade for a sausage sizzle outside the Latitude charity for homeless youth.
Latitude manager Rhonda Collins said $603.20 was raised by activities including a raffle.
“It was an opportunity to say thank you, in particular to the CFA, who are volunteers, for the fabulous work they do,” she said.
Ms Collins said the MFB’s work was often “beyond fires”.
