Engines kickstart Bayside College students’ job prospects

Students from the Newport campus of Bayside P-12 College and Point Cook Senior and The Grange colleges will be able to train to be diesel mechanics.

Laverton-based international diesel engine-maker Cummins donated two diesel engines to a new trades training centre as part of its training partnership with the schools.

The company is also offering work experience and school-based apprenticeships. The program, brokered by the WynBay Local Learning and Employment Network, will provide year 10 students with a week of work experience at Cummins.

Year 11 students will take part in a structured workplace learning program.

Year 12 students will be able to do an apprenticeship at Cummins while finishing school studies.

Apprentice program manager Kate Evans hoped the donation would encourage more students to become diesel mechanics.
