Seddon resident’s sweet secret to raising funds

Seddon’s Rosemerry Utber is really cooking in her quest to help tackle breast cancer.

Ms Utber will take part in her eighth Mother’s Day Classic run for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) in May, but she’s already off and running thanks to a secret fund-raising trick – baking.

“Lots of people ask for sponsorship, but we thought we would do something different so decided to do some baking every day from the start of April to Mother’s Day,” she said.

“I take muffins and cake in to work in exchange for a gold coin donation. Over the past couple of years I’ve raised more than $1000 each year.”

Ms Utber is up to $850 this year.

While she has always supported the cause behind the Mother’s Day Classic it has also become more personal over time.

“Since I started running my husband and I both have an aunt who has had breast cancer,” she said. “I think everybody knows somebody who has been affected.”

In 17 years, the Mother’s Day Classic – Australia’s largest charity event for NBCF – has raised almost $20 million for breast cancer research. The Melbourne leg of the event will be held in the Alexandra Gardens and on the Tan Track on Sunday, May 11.
