Spotswood man held over taxi driver bashing at service station

UPDATE:  A man has been arrested following the brutal bashing of a taxi driver at a service station in Spotswood.

Police say a 37-year-old Spotswood man was arrested at his home just after 8pm on Sunday. He is helping police with their inquiries.

It is believed the 35-year-old taxi driver was beaten and kicked unconscious while filling up his car on Melbourne Road, Spotswood, about 1.20am on Sunday.

Police say a man starting hitting the victim with a window-washing squeegee before smashing the cab’s side mirror. The offender then kicked the driver in the head, knocking him to the ground.

Police say the man continued to assault the victim on the ground, beating him unconscious.

The offender then returned to damage the taxi before fleeing the scene.

Police used CCTV footage from the service station to identify the offender.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said paramedics arrived at the service station just before 2am and found the taxi driver with abrasions and bruising to the upper body.

He was taken to the Western Hospital in Footscray in a stable condition.
