Altona Beach: Photographers to snap sea’s rise

Photographers are being invited to capture the king tide at Altona Beach on Sunday, June 15, at 2.30pm.

Hobsons Bay council is joining Green Cross, an organisation founded by former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev, for a Witness King Tides project.

The project involves people photographing the annual tidal phenomenon so future generations can map the sea-level rise and Australia’s changing coastline.

Last year’s event was more of a “prince tide” because of calm weather. Waves had been expected to peak at a metre above mean sea level, but Altona barely experienced a ripple.

Previous king tides have resulted in water flowing across the Esplanade.

The year’s event will be combined with World Environment Day’s examination of the impact of climate change on small developing nations such as the Pacific island of Tuvalu.

Photographers will meet at the Altona Beach pavilion at 2.30pm to take pictures before returning to upload images and enjoy traditional Pacific island refreshments and entertainment.

The event will include traditional and contemporary performances by Tuvalu Youth Group and Aniva (which means Milky Way). As well, a member of Melbourne’s Tuvalu community will give a presentation about the devastating effects of climate change on the low-lying island.
