Maribyrnong College’s Arabella Williams will be flying the flag for the west at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, starting on Thursday (Melbourne time).
The year 9 student was last week named winner of the ‘Commonwealth Class’ competition, for which she designed a flag to be flown at the Games.
The competition was part of an interactive learning project involving more than 100,000 schools around the Commonwealth.
Arabella’s flag depicts two hands coming together over the sea, one black and one white, and lists all the countries of the Commonwealth.
Arabella, who plays netball for the college’s sports academy, will head to the Scottish capital with teacher Fiona Walker for a week to soak up the atmosphere of the Games and meet with student representatives from other countries.
“It’s exciting and an honour to have been selected,” she said.
“I’ll be attending a few events while I’m over there, including the netball, so it’ll be a great experience.”
