It’s years since an all-male council sat in gawdy armchairs under the striking modernist dome of Altona’s civic chamber.
Now the community is being invited to sit down to Devonshire tea and view an exhibition celebrating the former Altona City Council, which existed from 1968-94.
The Country Women’s Association will provide tea and scones at Altona Homestead on September 6 and on the first Sunday of every month, from 11am-4pm.
Altona Laverton Historical Society president Peter Weaver curated the exhibition which features his late father and former mayor, Harry Weaver. “The exhibition is a celebration of the Altona City Council with a display of artefacts from the period: badges, cuff links, mayoral invitations, plaques, memorabilia and photos,” he said.
The display can also be viewed at the homestead, in Logan Reserve, for the next four Tuesdays from 11am-2pm.
