Maribyrnong council new boss to focus on trucks, liveability

Removing trucks from residential streets and enhancing the city’s liveability will be among the top priorities for newly appointed Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall.

Mr Wall, the chief executive of Surf Coast Shire on the Bellarine Peninsula, will take the reins at Maribynong for the next five years following the retirement of Vince Haining.

Mr Wall has more than 17 years in senior executive roles in local government across Victoria and New South Wales. Before moving to Surf Coast Shire 18 months ago, he was Maribyrong’s director of corporate services.

“My role will be working with the council to ensure Maribyrnong is equipped for the next five, 10 and 20 years,” Mr Wall told Star Weekly.

“Transport and Maribyrnong’s liveability have long been issues for Maribyrnong … I want to work with the state government to find alternatives, to get trucks off our residential streets.”

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said he was confident the council had picked the right man for the job.

“Stephen demonstrates a vision for where our city is heading,” he said.

“Our city faces huge challenges, including the new direction of Plan Melbourne, major transport infrastructure projects, driving renewal and revitalisation, and continuing to facilitate major development at Highpoint and sites such as Bradmill and Kinnears.

“We’re excited by the opportunities and we look forward to forging a strong working relationship with him [Mr Wall].”

Mr Wall begins his new role on October 22.
