A Williamstown man who battled depression after one of his best mates took his own life is reaching out to help others.
James Streets recently celebrated his 21st birthday and asked that his friends donate money to beyondblue rather than give presents.
Those friends and his family raised $2000 for the organisation, which helps raise awareness and supports people with anxiety and depression.
Mr Streets said he had lost one of his best friends on the last day of school in 2011. The following year, his uncle died after a stroke.
During his 21st birthday speech, Mr Streets revealed to family and friends that he had suffered “those demons called depression”.
“For nights on end I’d cry myself to sleep wanting for this thing called ‘life’ to stop being so cruel,” he told them.
“During this time, I kept it to myself. I didn’t want my parents, or anyone for that matter, to worry about me. Looking back, it was the wrong thing to do, but fortunately I got myself back on track to happiness.
“Tonight I’d like to give my ‘presents’ to beyondblue because there are people out there who need gifts more than me.
“To be a part of making anyone’s life better is the best gift I could receive.”
Mr Streets is urging others to talk to someone if they are experiencing depression.
“I found being social helped me, getting out of the house and talking to others really improved my mental state. Depression is not something to be ashamed of and it’s not something you should keep quiet about. Life is a gift and should be enjoyed by all.”
