Labor Opposition leader Daniel Andrews on Wednesday announced that if elected his government would remove the level crossing on Aviation Road at Laverton.
A 2012 Hobsons Bay council survey found the boom gates were down for a total of 40 minutes in the morning peak hour and 31.5 minutes at afternoon peak hour.
Mr Andrews said the Laverton crossing was among the worst in Melbourne.
“It’s dangerous, it’s congested, it’s deadly, it’s holding people back from getting to work, getting home to their families faster.
“It’s just gridlocked.
“We just stopped there for 45 minutes in the middle of school holidays and there was traffic banked up for a very long distance, a very significant traffic jam there today.”
Labor has previously announced it would remove level crossings at: Werribee and Cherry streets, Werribee; Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown North; and Ferguson Street, Williamstown.
Western suburbs Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the Napthine government had no plans to remove the Laverton level crossing.
He said the only western suburbs’ crossing currently earmarked for removal was in Main Road, St Albans.
“I’m not aware of any others that have been earmarked in the west as yet.”
