Hundreds of Victoria University staff and students blitzed dozens of community projects on Friday as part of the university’s annual Volunteer for You (V4U) Day.
Now in its fourth year, V4U aims to build relationships between students, academics and the local community.
Fuelled by an early-morning breakfast in Footscray’s Nicholson Street mall, more than 400 volunteers fanned out in teams across Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Moonee Valley, rolling up their sleeves to garden, paint, clean and collect litter.
Seven of the projects were undertaken as part of VU and Maribyrnong council’s strategy to rejuvenate Footscray as a ‘university town’.
V4U has been recognised by the Australian Association of Campus Activities and helps student volunteers receive credit toward student leadership qualifications.
