Young people at risk of falling through the cracks have a new place to call their own in the heart of Footscray.
Our Place is opening its doors to offer a safe space for disadvantaged and at-risk young people to come together and access a variety of services and programs.
Located just off Maddern Square, the space is an initiative of youth charity Kids Off The Kerb (KOTK).
Community development project manager Daniel Haile-Michael said young people would be encouraged to take ownership of the once-derelict space.
“We want them to feel empowered to make the right decisions,” he said.
“We will be running after-school homework clubs, music and art workshops, and educational and career pathway programs.”
KOTK is working with government, community groups, local businesses and youth support organisations on career programs.
“By working collaboratively with the local community we will offer a holistic service for young people where they don’t feel intimidated,” Mr Haile-Michael said.
