The next generation of western suburbs leaders has been honoured by the Western Bulldogs.
Participants in the 2014 Whitten Project leadership program were recognised in a graduation ceremony at Whitten Oval last Monday night.
The Whitten Project provides young men and women in years 9 or 10 with civic, sports and life experiences that help develop their leadership skills.
The initiative is delivered in partnership with Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank and Glenelg Shire councils, and the AFL and other sports organisations.
Hobsons Bay participant William McKenzie said the project had been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I have improved my leadership and social skills,” he said. “You get to learn about things that you wouldn’t learn at school or anywhere else. I’ve loved every minute of it.”
Melton’s Maddie Wood said the project had been a very positive experience, building her capacity for teamwork and resilience and introducing her to new friends.
“Looking back, I think that playing AFL 9s on the MCG would have to be my highlight of the experience,” she said.
“It was so exciting being out on the MCG field where many great athletes have stood before. I’m so lucky to have been able to take part in it.”
