A five per cent swing to Labor was emerging in the seat of Williamstown on Saturday night after votes were counted at 13 out of 16 booths.
By about 8.30pm, Labor’s Wade Noonan was on 68 per cent and the Liberals’ Alan Shae on 31.44 per cent under a two-candidate preferred vote.
On primaries, the Greens were headed for a record vote with candidate Simon Crawford on 21.3 per cent.
“Even though it looks good for Labor because they’ve had a swing from the Libs, I think that’s because people dislike the Libs more than they dislike Labor,” Mr Crawford said.
“I think people are just disillusioned with the two older parties and they want to see a change and they see the Greens as that change.”
Mr Shae polled 24.47 per cent of primaries and Mr Noonan 44.79 per cent.
Mr Noonan said there had been a good feeling out on the booths.
“It’s a seat that’s been held by Labor since 1904 and Labor’s campaign team have been working day and night to keep it that way,” he said.
