In 2022, the Altona College Student Representative Council endeavoured to acquire a series of cubby houses for the students to play in the prep to year 6 play space.

Leading teacher of student voice Michael Sperling said the cubby houses were achieved through the collaborative efforts of the school community, local businesses, and generous donors.

“The project received an overwhelming boost from local supporters, including Sweeney Real Estate in Altona and Crosier Scott Architects, who provided generous donations to make the purchase of the cubby houses possible,” he said.

“The structures themselves were procured from the Whittlesea Secondary College Trade Training Centre, a testament to the power of collaboration between educational institutions.”

After a long time planning, on Friday, June 16, staff, students, and team members from Bunnings Altona North rallied together to finally paint the cubby houses.

Mr Sperling said Bunnings Altona North supplied all the materials required for the transformative project to the school.

“The vibrant colours chosen for the cubbys not only enhance their appeal but also represent the businesses that contributed to the project,’ he said.

“While these cubby houses serve as delightful play structures, their significance extends far beyond mere amusement.

“They are powerful tools for children’s development, fostering imaginative play, nurturing social skills, encouraging physical activity, stimulating cognitive growth, and promoting emotional well-being.”

The cubby houses provide a unique learning environment that supports holistic development in our young learners and limitless possibilities for exploration, said Mr Sperling.

“The eagerly anticipated next phase of the project will see the cubby houses relocated to the play space early next term,” he said

“This exciting development will benefit students across the primary school, ensuring countless years of joy, growth, and educational opportunities for generations to come.”
