While a child’s first day of school is always exciting for any parent, for Sebastian Caviedes, it’s even more so considering the long family connection he and his family has with St Margaret’s in Maribyrnong.

Not only did Mr Caviedes attend the primary school where his son will start prep this year, but both his mother and grandmother were cleaners at the school for many years.

“My grandma was cleaning the school and then she got a bit older, and then my mom started cleaning the school,” Mr Caviedes said.

“Then I went to school there [and] my mom was still the cleaner. Mum took a couple of years off maybe three or four years ago….to look after my grandmother when she was sick.”

Mr Caviedes’ mother has now brought the cleaning businesses back to the school after being asked by principal Gavin Brennan if she wanted to return.

Mr Brennan said having children of past students attend the school is a great endorsement of it’s community.

“Many members of the extended family have been associated with the school as students or even as staff. Sebastian’s auntie worked as a Learning Support Officer,” he said.

“We are very excited to have the third generation of this family joining our community for their learning journey.”
