The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has revealed the nine trees contending for the prestigious title of 2023 Victorian Tree of the Year.

The shortlist for this award includes three finalists hailing from Melbourne and six from regional Victoria, one of which is located in Hobsons Bay.

The Moreton Bay Fig is located in Logan Reserve on Queen St, Altona, with a large canopy spread of 28 meters.

This Moreton Bay Fig is approximately 105 years old and stands next to Altona Homestead which is the oldest standing building in Altona.

National Trust of Australia (Victoria) chief executive Simon Ambrose said the Victorian Tree of the Year contest aims to raise awareness of the conservation of the state’s natural heritage and highlight the many benefits trees provide to our culture and way of life.

“The Victorian Tree of the Year is a fantastic opportunity for us to appreciate the natural wonders that surround us,” said Mr Ambrose.

“These trees provide their local communities with serenity and respite and represent the diverse and awe-inspiring beauty of Victoria’s natural environment.

“We encourage all Victorians to have their say in recognising these majestic members of our community.”

Voting is open until midnight Sunday , October 29, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday, October 31.
