A new class of creativity

Two new art pieces have been unveiled at Point Cook Senior College earlier this week following an artist-in-residency project.

The school teamed up with the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne University’s graduate school of education for the residency, which allowed about 40 of its students to collaborate with artists.

Altona Meadows artist Samantha Sokolis, who is undertaking a Masters degree to teach art, design and English, worked with year 10 and 11 design students to create a billboard with a “bridge” theme.

“It’s a metaphor for connecting communities, and art and design, and students across different year levels. It was really open to interpretation from the students and the artwork is really full-on and random,” Ms Sokolis said.

“It is a community-based project to practice in a school, work as an artist and collaborate with students and staff to generate a work for the school while talking about contemporary practice, the role of artists and the career options.

“This residency is to support making, being and doing as a contemporary artist.”

Fellow artist Molly Chen taught students the secrets behind ceramics, creating a series of ceramic pieces under the theme “container”.
