Friends of Skeleton Creek is urging people to check out new interpretive signs, providing information about the area’s nature, recently installed along the waterway in Hobsons Bay.

The nine signs, from west of the Point Cook Road bridge at Seabrook to the Point Cook footbridge in Cheetham Wetlands, were funded by a Hobsons Bay council environment grant of more than $25,000.

Formed in 1991, the Friends group protects and restores the creek environment, and also acts as a watchdog for water quality.

Secretary Denice Perryman said the creek was “pretty special” as it ran from Port Phillip Bay through Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally-recognised under the Ramsar convention and known to support more than 200 bird species.

“About two years ago, we discovered that there was quite a lot of signage along Skeleton Creek in the Wyndham area but almost nothing in Hobsons Bay and so we thought that we would like to remedy that,” she said.

The Friends group holds regular activities in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham, with a mulch-spreading day planned for Hoppers Crossing on March 26 and sign rejuvenation and shrub planting at Seabrook on April 11.
