Adelaide indie-electronic duo Nakatomi are about to bring the party to Footscray.
Riding high after being shortlisted for a South Australia Music Award, Nakatomi will perform at Sad Grrrls Fest at The Reverence Hotel on November 11.
Nakatomi – Emily Smart and Hamish Cox – combine big production with melodic nostalgia, tapping into the spirit of ’80s nu-wave and ’90s grunge with liberal helpings of modern electro pop.
“We formed just over two years ago as an experiment with a new genre and the experiment snowballed into a band,” Smart explains.
“It’s high energy nostalgic pop with a dark twist: think Madonna, Halsey and Purity Ring melded together.”
Nakatomi’s catchy new single ‘Wooden Castle’ melds retro pop vibes with current production values and “explores themes of feeling stuck and stifled whilst striving towards goals that seem out of reach.”
The Adelaide duo has been creating a healthy buzz and has been nominated for a South Australia Music Award for Most Popular Electronic Act.
“It’s great to be amongst that list of nominees getting a nod from the wider population of music lovers,” Smart says.
Nakatomi is making its third trip to Melbourne to play at Sad Grrrls Fest on Saturday, alongside the likes of Major Leagues, Moaning Lisa, Huntly, Rachel Maria Cox, and Antonia and The Lazy Susans.
“There will be plenty of great music featuring a high percentage of females, good times, and us doing a high intensity dance workout that anyone can join in on,” Smart said.
“We are looking forward to the supportive live music fans, which Melbourne never fails to deliver on.”
