Air quality concerns after West Footscray fire

Police are investigating a fire at a West Footscray rubbish dump that has sent smoke billowing across Melbourne.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Robbs Road about 1am Monday.

Crews arrived to find large plumes of black smoke pouring from a pile of rubbish measuring 30 metres by 10 metres by five metres.

Machinery was used to pull the flaming pile of debris apart so it could be extinguished.

A community warning was issued due to the smoke, which residents from as far away as St Kilda reported smelling.

Three MFB crews attended the blaze and the fire was deemed under control at 2.30am.

At 7.16 the CFA issued an all-clear but said traffic in the area may still be affected.

“People located within the area are now able to resume normal activities.”

The cause will be investigated.

Anyone experiencing any symptoms that may be due to exposure to the smoke is urged to seek medical advice or call ‘Nurse on Call’ on 1300 606 024.
