All hands on deck for international event

The best of the world’s young yachting talent will be coming to Williamstown later this year, as part of the International Cadet World Championships.

Launched in 1967 and with previous championships held across the globe, including in Italy, Poland and Germany, the 2022 International Cadet World Championships will be hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria in Williamstown from Monday, December 19 until Wednesday, January 4.

The event will see seven year-olds compete alongside 17 year-olds in a two-child boat with three sails.

Williamstown will welcome about 1000 visitors for the event, including representatives from 13 Great British teams and four crews from Belgium, as well as teams from Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands.

Australia will have 14 teams in the World Championships and 30 in the Promotional series, with about 70 international teams of two children competing across three regattas.

The club is seeking sponsorship opportunities ahead of the event and is also hosting a nautical marketplace from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, September 17 at 120 Nelson Place in Williamstown, which will welcome Williamstown and Hobsons Bay locals to sell their various nautical wares, such as rigging, lines, anchors and motors.

The club will also host a corporate sailing day on Friday, November 4, with the club inviting Williamstown businesses out for a race on members’ yachts.
