An Altona couple has landed a whopping 150.95-kilogram southern bluefin tuna, one of the biggest ever caught off the coast of Portland.

Robbie Adamo said he and partner Amy Jobson had made a last-minute decision to hook up his five-metre boat and go fishing.

“I can’t argue that it was the best decision I’ve made this southern bluefin tuna season,” he said.

“Leaving the harbour, I travelled towards where I had previously caught fish and I received a call from a friend who had found bait (fish).

“I had a strong feeling that if I was going to hook up, this was the place.”

But after trawling around for a while, Mr Adamo said he couldn’t catch anything other than bait fish.

“So my plans changed and I was travelling away when my godfather’s rod that was in the corner with our favourite Evil Angel lure started screaming,” he said.

“Within 15 minutes we had gaffed the tuna.

“With only two of us on board and after several attempts we managed to get it into the boat.

“At first we didn’t realise how big it actually was. It was a breathtaking fish … 150.95kilograms.”
