Men’s Shed reopens after $500,000 makeover

The Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed will reopen on July 9 after a $500,000 makeover.

The “shed”, on the Truganina Explosives Reserve at Altona, is also home to the Altona City Theatre Group, Williamstown Musical Theatre Company and Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society.

Repairs included asbestos removal and installation of accessible ramps, toilets, handrails and doors.

Men’s shed secretary Les Auld said the upgrade would help the group in its commitment to men’s health and being more accessible to people with disabilities.

“Council has excelled itself in what it has achieved,” he said.

The men’s shed has more than 300 members, who meet weekly to socialise and make and repair items for the community.

Activities include woodwork, technology, motoring, scale-model making, cooking and photography.

Cherry Lake ward councillor Jason Price said the shed’s user groups did great work in the community and it was important council invested in buildings to house them.

“While we take no pleasure in shouldering the repair costs for a building owned by the state government, we believe the investment is well worth it for the value these groups bring to our community,” he said.
