An Altona house is being given away for free.

But there’s a catch – the new oweners must take the house away, rather than moving in.

The Belmar Avenue house is being advertised on various social media groups to be removed.

Its seller, Kylie West, said her family was offering the original 1952 weatherboard house at the front of the property, as an alternative to demolishing it, so they can rebuild there.

Her family bought the house in 2010 for $515,000.

The house, which is ready to move into, has three bedrooms, one bathroom, a renovated kitchen with stone benches and SMEG appliances and original hardwood floors.

Ms West said her seven-year-old boy was sentimental about the house and would like to see it go to a good owner rather than be torn down.

“I raised my baby here, so there’s lots of memories associated with all the corners … he learnt to walk here,” she said. “It’s been really hard making this decision because he’s quite emotionally attached – this is his house, he says. He said, ‘I want it to be still loved, mama’.”

The house will be available for removal in about two months.

“We did a small reno on it when we first moved in,” Ms West said. “My partner and I have always loved renovating. The rear extension … that doesn’t come with the house, it’s on a slab.

“Ideally, it’s going to be a project for someone to take and put somewhere and then renovate it. We want the house to be preserved.”
