Altona Meadows assault leaves man still unable to walk

Police doorknocked an Altona Meadows street and raided a Tarneit home on Friday as part of an investigation in to an assault that has left a man still unable to walk three months later.

A 34-year-old Fawkner man had both legs broken during an assault by a number of males after he visited a house in Oakdene Grove South, Altona Meadows, about noon on October 15.

Two days earlier, the house had been subject to a home invasion by up to 10 armed men.

Detective Senior Constable Michael Ditchman of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit said police believed the two incidents were linked.

He said police interviewed a 34-year-old man living at the house in relation to the assault but he was released pending further inquiries.

On Friday morning, police executed a search warrant at a house in Bonica Street, Tarneit, and questioned a 38-year-old man over the assault. He was also released pending further inquiries.

Detective Senior Constable Ditchman said that during the October 13 aggravated burglary, eight to 10 men armed with weapons had forced their way into the Oakdene Grove South house.

A man and woman who were home at the time jumped over the back fence and hid in their neighbour’s backyard while the men ransacked their house.

Detective Senior Constable Ditchman said two days later, on October 15, the 34-year-old man from Fawkner arrived at the house.

“He’s known to the occupants of that house,” he said.

“He’s received serious injuries during an incident at that house.

“He’s still trying to recover.

“He still can’t walk. He had broken legs.

“We believe there’s some sort of link between both incidents.”

Five males were arrested over the aggravated burglary.

Three have been charged.

A 20-year-old Oakleigh man, 20-year-old Dandenong North man and 16-year-old Keysborough boy were charged with offences including aggravated burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
