An Altona North man has been jailed for attempting to procure a 13-year-old girl from overseas for sexual abuse activity.

The 44-year-old was sentenced in the County Court on Monday to three years and 10 months’ jail.

The court heard the man was also sending child abuse material to other children online.

He was caught after the Victorian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team received an intelligence report from UK police.

In January, 2019, Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police raided the man’s Altona North home and seized a mobile phone containing child abuse material.

Police told the court the man was communicating with a 13-year-old child from the UK.

He had sent her gifts and messages saying he wanted to take her away from her family.

Police proved the man was actively talking about travelling overseas to meet the child with intent to engage in sexual abuse activity.

He pleaded guilty to one count each of procuring a child to engage in sexual activity outside Australia, knowingly possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16.

The man must serve a minimum of two years and eight months jail and will be a registered sex offender for life.
